BORIS JOHNSON: How can we claim moral superiority over autocracies when judges here and in America seek to take power from the people? Let 2024 be the year we champion true democracy

So Putin continues his murderous onslaught on the innocent — rocket after rocket, bomb after bomb. He sends them slamming into homes, into maternity wards, still hoping that he can terrorise the Ukrainians into submission.

After almost two years of hideous conflict, I am more confident than ever that he will fail. He will fail because he has lit an unquenchable flame in the hearts of a great European people.

He has kindled new patriotism in Ukraine that will outlive Putin or any Russian tyrant that may come after him. Propelled by that phenomenal ardour the Ukrainians have already done things that we once said were impossible.

They have kicked Putin’s troops out of more than 50 per cent of the territory he claimed in early 2022. This is Ukraine, remember, the country that was supposed to be gone in five days.

The Ukrainians are steadily degrading Russia‘s Black Sea Fleet, with, I am proud to say, significant British help. They now need more help, from us and from all our friends, and…
