Hugs for the road: Gareth Southgate and his England players embrace each other as they go their separate ways at Stansted after gruelling Euro 2024 campaign ended in heartbreak

Gareth Southgate and his England players embraced each other before going their separate ways at Stansted today.

The England team touched down on a private jet after they left their five-star hotel in Berlin without greeting fans.

Pictures seen by MailOnline show Gareth Southgate shaking hands and hugging his England players, who appeared despondent following their Euros final defeat.  

Southgate was dressed down in a t-shirt and tracksuit rather than his iconic £45 M&S cream polo shirt as he was the first to leave the plane with his assistant manager Steve Holland.

The crestfallen squad followed wearing their England training kit and rucksacks over their shoulders as they walked into the terminal’s private building having been greeted by a lone member of airport staff.

The players quickly exited the building where they were met by their personal chauffeur and driven away. 

The Three Lions hopes of ending England’s ’58 years of hurt’ were dashed last night after the men’s side…
