Are we heading for an Indian Summer? Map reveals where temperatures could hit balmy 22C this week – after Britain was battered by torrential rain that flooded rail lines

Parts of Britain will enjoy temperatures of up to 22C (72F) by the middle of this week after torrential rain caused chaos for commuters and flooded railways today.

Heavy downpours blocked the line between Ash and Guildford in Surrey, cancelling and delaying both Great Western Railway and South Western Railway trains.

Commuters using Southeastern, Thameslink, London Overground, CrossCountry and Heathrow Express were also delayed by a series of separate problems.

Meanwhile drivers had to take extra care due to surface flooding on the roads during a very wet morning for central and southern Britain, with the heaviest rain in the East.

The Environment Agency also placed 40 areas on flood watch today with a series of alerts imposed across England – all in the South or Midlands.

Temperatures fell to -3.1C (26.4F) at Redesdale in Northumberland this morning – England’s coldest night of autumn so far – after a chilly weekend for many, although South West England woke up to 14C (57F) highs.
