Kano, Adamawa, and Borno States have emerged as the leading contributors to the Value Added Tax (VAT) pool in northern Nigeria for 2024, according to a report released by Agora Policy, a Nigerian think tank dedicated to addressing pressing national challenges.
Kano State led the region with VAT contributions amounting to N77.7 billion, making it the fourth-largest contributor nationwide. Adamawa and Borno States followed as the second and third highest contributors in the North, contributing N42.01 billion and N35.29 billion, respectively. However, both states ranked 10th and 11th among the 36 states of the federation.
Despite their significant contributions, all 19 northern states received allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) that far exceeded their VAT revenues.
This trend was evident across most states in the country, with Lagos, Rivers, and Oyo being the only states to receive less than they contributed.
