Man Utd and Arsenal slammed for ‘backwards’ signings of Andre Onana and David Raya as goalkeeper tinkering questioned

GOAL Manchester United and Arsenal have gone “backwards” in goalkeeping quality after bringing in Andre Onana and David Rayar, says Jamie Carragher.

  • Man Utd & Arsenal brought in new goalkeepers
  • Onana and Raya have been heavily criticised
  • Carragher sees them as downgrades on predecessors

WHAT HAPPENED?

Onana and Raya have faced criticism for blatant errors in their debut season at United and Arsenal, respectively. United splashed out to sign the Cameroon star from Inter to replace David De Gea, while Mikel Arteta made Raya his first choice goalkeeper ahead of England international Aaron Ramsdale.

WHAT CARRAGHER SAID

Ex-Liverpool star Carragher said on the Stick to Football podcast that the pair have been the worst summer signings in the Premier League this season, saying: “The biggest disappointments in the Premier League so far this season would be the two goalkeepers at Manchester United and Arsenal. They’ve been quite poor after coming in as ‘improvements’ from the previous keepers, and it’s almost stayed the same or even gone backwards with them coming in.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

United’s Champions League hopes have been put in grave danger due to errors from Onana. He has been seen as the main culprit for their disappointing results in Europe, most recently after they surrendered a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 with Galatasaray. Raya, on the other hand, has made several high-profile errors in the Premier League and Luton manager Rob Edwards admitted that his team targeted the goalkeeper in an attempt to force him into making his glaring mistake. Luckily for the Spaniard, Arsenal rescued a 3-2 win against them earlier this week…
