Operatives of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) have lamented the non-payment of their allowances for the 2023 General Elections. Some of the NIS officials said that personnel of other departments in the Ministry of Interior had been paid their entitlements.

They added that they used their personal funds throughout the polls, with the expectation that they would be refunded. The officials urged the NIS authorities not to give any room for foul play, but to ensure that their allowances were paid.

“Many of us paid for hotel and other expenses during the just concluded presidential election, but all we get is that they are working on the payment.

“But I tell you sincerely that few bigwigs in Abuja will gather to share the money and victimise anyone who tries to raise his or her head up.

“We are calling on the authorities to pay our allowances and let it not be promise and fail as usual.”

Another official said, “The allowances for election duties were supposed to be paid before February 25 into our accounts but nobody has received a dime.

“The officers among us are entitled to N70,000, while the rank and file are entitled to N30,000. We have done all they asked us to do and everybody is already fed up.”

Recently, SaharaReporters exclusively reported that the Nigeria Police Force refused to pay the special duty allowances to its personnel who participated in same February 25 Presidential and National Assembly polls.

Some of the officers had told SaharaReporters that if the money was not paid they would boycott the March 11 governorship and state house of assembly elections.

The officers had said they used their own funds throughout the elections expecting that they would be refunded.

“Nigerian police officers are suffering in terms of salaries. Imagine, after working diligently for the elections, police are entitled to collect N150,000 for election allowances but we didn’t get any money,” a female Superintendent of Police had told SaharaReporters.

“Those that received; just a few of us got N35,000. Please come to our aid, we police are working but suffering in terms of our salaries. Kindly tell our IGP (Inspector General of Police) to pay us our money. Even our arrears that the President signed for us, we were not paid.”

Sequel to report of SaharaReporters, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, met with the DMOs at the police force Headquarters in Abuja last Monday, to address the alleged delay or non-payments of the police personnel election allowances.
