Elon Musk has come under fire for liking a Twitter post that says “sterilize autistic kids”.
The tweet in question featured a meme, with rapper Drake pulling a dislike and like face on one side and trans actor Elliot Page wearing a t-shirt on the other.
In the top image, Page’s t-shirt has the slogan “support trans kids” on it, but in the bottom image the same top has been edited to read “sterilize autistic kids”.
The meme implies that autistic children are misidentifying themselves as transgender.
While a report in 2020 found a significant self-report overlap between gender dysphoria and autism, there is no data to suggest either condition being misdiagnosed for the other.
