Elvis Onwubolo, a 27-year-old Nigerian immigrant who travelled to Italy via the Mediterranean, has missed his way while trying to return to Nigeria using the same means.

According to a December 25 article published by Infomigrants, the Nigerian who had arrived the European country in 2016 via the Mediterranean, a known illegal migration route, took the decision to return to Nigeria when he realised he had missed home and thought it was best to reunite with his family members.

He, however, got lost while trying to find his way to Nigeria via the sea and was found by the Italian police in Linosa, a tiny Sicilian island in the southern part of Italy.

“I didn’t find a job in Italy, no one helped me and I felt all alone. In the last few years, I feel [sic] that I was going slowly mad. Only my faith in Jesus has helped sustain me,” said Onwubolo.

In early December, he decided to start the long journey home and set off by train toward Sicily.

When he got to Sicily, he hid in the back of a truck, believing it would take him to the Mediterranean. The truck, however, did not get to Lampedusa, an Italian Island that lay very close to the sea, before it stopped.
