NELFUND moves to block students from collecting loans while parents pay tuition
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced plans to prevent students from accessing education loans while simultaneously collecting tuition payments from their parents.
According to PUNCH, NELFUND Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr disclosed this during a press briefing on Wednesday.
Sawyerr said the agency had discovered cases of students benefiting from the loan scheme while still demanding school fees from their parents.
“This comment is based on our recognition that there are so many students out there who are double-dipping. They are taking from NELFUND and still stressing their parents,” he said.
He added, “We are going to put an end to that.”
The agency plans to introduce a verification system allowing parents to confirm whether their children’s tuition fees have been paid.
NELFUND also announced plans to organise educational workshops across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to explain changes to the scheme.
Officials said the initiative would improve transparency and prevent duplicate payments.
