The federal government of Nigeria will begin a nationwide clampdown on irregular migrants starting August 1, according to Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. Speaking at a meeting with representatives of the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) in Abuja, the minister announced a three-month grace period from May 1 to allow unauthorized migrants to regularize their status before enforcement begins. Additionally, a new Expatriate Administration System (EAS) will take effect on May 1, streamlining immigration protocols before the crackdown.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that companies must comply with immigration laws, warning that any entity obstructing the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will face strict penalties. He also announced an immigration amnesty program to support compliance and the regularization of processes. Furthermore, the minister revealed a review of government fees to promote sustainability in immigration-related businesses.
