Senator Shekarau formally dumps APC

Former Kano State governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has formally dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

His resignation was contained in a letter read at plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

BBC Hausa reported in May that Shekarau has been offered the opportunity to contest for a senate seat as the candidate of his new party.

But the former Kano governor waited until one month later to formally tender his resignation to the leadership of the National Assembly.

His resignation was followed by loud voices among the Senators with the Senate President calling for calm.

Shekarau, one of the founding members of APC, in 2014, defected from the APC to the People Democratic Party (PDP).
