Labour Party in Turmoil: NLC pickets party offices, Obi allegedly abandons National Chairman

The Labour Party (LP) finds itself engulfed in a crisis as members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) picket the party’s national secretariat and some state offices, escalating tensions within the organization. Reports suggest that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, along with his supporters known as the Obidients, have distanced themselves from the LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, amid internal strife following the conclusion of the 2023 general elections.

Amidst allegations of financial impropriety and internal conflicts, Abure faces mounting pressure from within the party. Former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi, called for a thorough investigation into allegations of embezzlement levelled against Abure by the party’s national treasurer, Oluchi Oparah, who accused him of misappropriating N3.5 billion. Concerns have also been raised about Abure’s alleged collaboration with the Edo State Government and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the September 2024 governorship polls.

The LP’s leadership under Abure has drawn criticism for allegedly operating the party as a “sole administrator,” prompting the NLC to stage protests at the party’s headquarters in Abuja. Dr. Theophilus Ndubuaku of the NLC Political Commission condemned Abure’s leadership style, emphasizing the need for change within the party’s administration.

The LP’s planned national convention, spearheaded by Abure, has further exacerbated tensions, with stakeholders rejecting the proposal as illegitimate. The NLC, in an open letter, condemned the convention, demanding Abure’s resignation and calling for transparency in the party’s affairs.

Amidst the turmoil, discussions have surfaced regarding the potential appointment of Comrade Isaac Balami, a former Deputy National Campaign Manager, as the next National Chairman of the LP. Balami, acknowledging the pressure to assume the role, highlighted ongoing challenges hindering his decision.

Dr. Yunusa Salisu Tanko, Chief Spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, emphasized the importance of building a united and inclusive party structure, expressing concerns over the lack of transparency surrounding the planned convention.

While rumors circulate regarding Peter Obi’s alleged departure from the party ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, Tanko dismissed these claims, affirming Obi’s commitment to the LP. As the LP navigates internal discord, the path forward remains uncertain, with stakeholders advocating for accountability, transparency, and unity within the party.
