If Peter Obi prefers, he’s free to leave LP – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) remains resolute in its bid to remove Julius Abure as the Labour Party’s national chairman, despite his re-election in what they deem an “illegal” convention. NLC spokesperson Benson Upah affirmed their stance, stating that Abure lacks legitimacy in their eyes.

Meanwhile, retired workers’ groups are also calling for Abure’s resignation, alongside NLC President Joe Ajaero, amidst a leadership feud. Former Anambra governor and LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed frustration with the party’s leadership over procedural issues at the Nnewi convention, signaling potential discord.

Obi’s absence at the convention, citing lack of wider stakeholder consultation, has fueled speculation about his future political alignment, although NLC asserts his right to decide independently. While acknowledging Obi’s value, NLC maintains its stance, leaving his party allegiance to his discretion.

While describing him as an asset, the NLC spokesman reiterated that the congress would not stand in his way if he chose to leave.

“The right of choice is available to Mr Obi. If he chooses to leave the party, that is his preference. We can’t sit in judgment over him on that. But if he chooses to remain, of course, Peter Obi is an asset any day. I rest my case on that,” he added.
