Aiyedatiwa’s 334 aides: Height of political patronage or strategic governance?

The Olugbenga Edema Campaign Organisation of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has condemned Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s recent appointment of 344 Special Assistants (SAs) and Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) in Ondo State. The NNPP described the move as “insensitive” and “misguided” in light of the state’s current economic challenges and the upcoming governorship elections.

While Governor Aiyedatiwa maintained that the appointments would improve governance and administration across the state’s 18 Local Government Areas, 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), and 203 political wards, NNPP spokesperson Oluwatosin Ayeni questioned the timing of these appointments. Ayeni argued that the governor’s actions were motivated by a desire to secure political loyalty rather than focusing on the needs of Ondo State residents.

Furthermore, the NNPP campaign organization highlighted the financial implications of the appointments, stating that the governor’s decision to use state funds to pay the estimated N300,000 monthly salary for each aide showed a “gross misdirection of government priorities.” They suggested that these resources would be better spent on essential sectors such as education, healthcare, or infrastructure.
