Politics Is a covenant: Demand accountability on development promises – Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr Nyesom Wike has called for increased accountability between elected officials and residents, describing politics as a “covenant between the elected and the electors.”

Wike encouraged area council residents to hold both appointed and elected officials accountable, especially on project completion.

“When we say a road will be built, it will be built. Our administration is here to fulfill its promises,” he affirmed, inviting residents of Bwari , Kwali, AMAC, and other councils to observe the ongoing developments.

He made this known when he flagged off the construction of an 18-kilometer road project to enhance connectivity across strategic areas, including Shaffa village, the War College, and the Secretariat (SEC) area.

Wike emphasized his administration’s dedication to bringing infrastructure and social development to both urban and rural communities within Abuja.

Responding to claims that the FCT administration is overly focused on the city, Wike dismissed these criticisms as baseless. “Anyone saying we are concentrating only on the city lacks insight. We are bringing development to the grassroots, and if you have eyes, you’ll see the difference,” he stated, affirming that rural areas are integral to his plans.

The project, awarded to an indigenous contractor, aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s goal to empower local businesses. “This administration values indigenous contractors who show capacity and commitment to work,” Wike noted, commending the contractor’s resources and progress on-site.

He acknowledged his initial skepticism toward indigenous contractors due to past experiences where some contractors would accept mobilization funds only to abandon projects. “But I’m pleased to see a new level of dedication here,” he remarked.
