Multiple people are reported to have died after two planes smashed into each other in a freak mid-air collision.
The incident occurred on Thursday (August 18) during two attempted landings in Watsonville, California and involved three people onboard two private Cessna 152 and Cessna 340 aircraft.
No one on the ground was injured, according to the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), while the number of casualties on the planes has not yet been confirmed.
The crash, which unfolded shortly before 3pm local time (11pm UK time) saw the two aeroplanes collide near the city’s municipal airport.
Michelle Pulido, spokesperson for the Watsonville Police Department, said both appeared to be attempting to land when the collision happened.
One of planes went down into a field, while another is understood to have hit an aircraft hangar. A photograph uploaded to the city of Watsonville’s official Twitter account shows wreckage from a small plane strewn outside the structure.
Witnesses speaking to local media reported seeing one of the planes ‘spiral’ while falling to the ground, accompanied by a loud bang.
