Major car firm General Motors halts Twitter advertising after Elon Musk takeover

A US car giant has pulled paid advertising on Twitter following Elon Musk’s takeover of the social media company while other firms are believed to be considering their options after the new owner vowed to reinstate accounts banned “for dubious reasons.”

General Motors, which competes with Musk’s Tesla car company, has announced it has temporarily paused its paid advertising on Twitter.

The automaker has described the temporary halting of paid advertisements on the platform as a “normal course of business with a significant change in a media platform” as it evaluates Twitter’s new direction.

Elon Musk’s $44bn (£38bn) deal to buy Twittercompleted on Thursday and he has reportedlysacked the company’s chief executive and two other top bosses.

The billionaire has said there will be no changes to Twitter’s content moderation policies for now, although he has announced the creation of a new content moderation council.

“To be super clear, we have not yet made any changes to Twitter’s content moderation policies,” tweeted Musk. He also tweeted that “anyone suspended for minor and dubious reasons” would be “freed from Twitter jail.” He tweeted: “Comedy is now legal on Twitter.”

His takeover of Twitter has already had an impact, with GM Motors temporarily pausing paid advertising – although the Detroit automaker has stated it is engaging with Twitter to understand the direction of the platform under its new ownership and says its “customer care interactions on Twitter will continue…
