Every year, February 14 commemorates Valentine’s Day celebration across the world.
On this special day, people express love to one another. It is often referred to as a season of romance and love, which is accentuated with the red and white colours.
The culture of presenting gifts has also weaved its way into the celebration, and over the years, flowers, boxes, cards and teddy bears have gained prominence.
In Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, this year’s Valentine’s Day was marked quite differently amid the cash crunch and fuel scarcity.
FIJ visited some places in Lagos to see how the day was being celebrated.
Although the shops were colourful, it was not the same for the popular Elegushi Beach, which is usually crowded during holiday seasons with fun seekers.
Felix Ade (not real name), a worker at the beach told FIJ it was deserted mostly because of the scarcity of naira notes in the country.
“The cash crunch is affecting most people in the country. The beach is a usually a busy place,” he said.
“On good days, you will see cars everywhere with people milling around, but today, people don’t even have money to eat.”
