CLETUS IBETO: Nigeria’s wealthy late-starter who completed secondary school at 48 and built a massive business empire

Dr. Cletus Madubugwu Ibeto, a highly successful Nigerian entrepreneur and businessman, is the driving force behind the Ibeto Group, one of the nation’s most prominent and diverse indigenous industrial conglomerates. Born in Nigeria’s Anambra State, Ibeto began his business journey through the Igbo apprenticeship system, commonly referred to as imu-ahia. This unique system allowed him to hone his skills in business and entrepreneurship before embarking on his own ventures.

Following his apprenticeship, Ibeto established Ibeto Brothers Trading Company, focusing on importing and distributing automotive batteries and plastic motor accessories. Recognizing the importance of local production, he opened a factory in Nnewi to reduce dependence on direct importation. Over time, Ibeto’s factory grew to become one of Nigeria’s largest auto spare parts manufacturing outfits.

During the Shehu Shagari administration, Ibeto’s business acumen enabled him to secure a highly coveted importation license, giving him a monopoly over the importation of spare parts. His quick action and strategic decision-making allowed him to import as many as 65 containers of spare parts, while other importers hesitated and were ultimately left behind due to policy changes.

Today, Dr. Cletus Madubugwu Ibeto serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs, demonstrating the power of resilience, adaptability, and forward-thinking in the ever-evolving world of business.
