Sergio Aguero will leave Manchester City this summer transfer window.

The Argentine striker announced the move via Twitter this evening, and it was also confirmed by the Premier League leaders.

Aguero has spent a decade at the Etihad Stadium and in that time managed to provide one of the most iconic moments in the league’s 29 year history when he secured The Citizens their first Premier League title in 2012.

However, before joining the Manchester side, the Guardian report that he almost joined Chelsea for £45 million, which would have been a British record at the time, before Atletico Madrid raised their asking price.

Announcing his departure from Man City, Aguero said: “When a cycle comes to an end, many sensations arise.

“A huge sense of satisfaction and pride remains in me for having played with Manchester City for a whole ten seasons – unusual for a professional player in this day and age.

“Ten seasons with major achievement, throughout which I was able to become the top historic goalscorer and forging an indestructible bond with all those who love this club – people who will always be in my heart.

“I was to join during the reconstruction era of 2011, and with the guidance of the owners and the contribution of many players, we earned a place among the greatest in the world.

“The task to maintain this well-deserved privileged position will remain on others.

“As for myself, I will continue to give it my utmost for the rest of the season to win more titles and bring more joy to the fans. Then, a new stage with new challenges will begin and I am fully ready to face them with the same passion and professionalism that I have always dedicated to continue competing at the highest level.”

His next destination after leaving Man City is left unclear but previous comments about joining Chelsea could give Blues fans hope that Aguero will soon be plying his trade at Stamford Bridge.

In 2010 he told reporters: “I look at players like [Didier] Drogba and [Frank] Lampard and they have been – and still are – the best players in their positions in the world. I could really learn from players like that.

“Chelsea are a great club. They have become one of the most feared in Europe over recent years. London would be a really amazing city to live in as well – myself and my wife could be really happy there.”

Whether he still holds those hops and beliefs that Chelsea could be a good fit for him remains to be seen.
