Jose Mourinho in tears as Roma replace him with club legend hours after sacking

Jose Mourinho was left in tears after he was sacked by Roma on Tuesday morning following their miserable run of form.

Roma confirmed that Mourinho, alongside his coaching staff, were relieved of their duties with immediate effect after the Giallorossi were comfortably beaten by AC Milan at San Siro on Sunday – condemning Roma to a third league defeat in five games, leaving them 9th in the Serie A.

Despite becoming evidently frustrated as Roma boss towards the end of his spell, as he was sent off twice in three days, including in his penultimate game which was defeat against city rivals Lazio in the Coppa Italia, Roma and their fans still clearly hold a place in the Portuguese’s heart.

A video posted to social media saw a group of Roma fans thanking and saying goodbye to the popular Mourinho, who won the Conference League in 2019, as he left the club for the final time. The words from the fans pulled on the heartstrings of the 60-year-old who fought back the tears before he was driven away while the fans sang his name.

Meanwhile, with Mourinho’s seat still warm, Roma moved to appoint club legend Daniele De Rossi as manager until the end of the season. The 40-year-old played 616 games for his boyhood club across 18 years – only second to the iconic Francesco Totti. Barring a brief spell at Boca Juniors in Argentina after leaving Roma, their former captain was a one club man.
