Woman in Mendy rape case 'Googled his net worth before making statement'

A woman accusing Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy of rape allegedly searched the internet for his net worth before making her police statement, a court heard.

The 28-year-old footballer is on trial accused of eight counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape. He denies all charges.

Chester Crown Court heard Mendy raped one of the alleged victims while at his home in Cheshire in July last year. The woman said in evidence yesterday she came up with excuses as to why she could not have sex with him but said it was like “arguing with a brick wall”.

This afternoon Mendy’s barrister Eleanor Laws, QC, claimed the woman “searched Mendy’s net worth” before her recorded police interview in February of this year.

Ms Laws said: “Why would you be searching for Mr Mendy’s net worth before making your statement?” The woman replied: “What date did I do that?”

Ms Laws continued: “Why would you be interested in how much money he earns or what he was worth on the 17 January this year?” The alleged victim said: “I wasn’t particularly interested in that but he was in the headlines and stuff and I was being asked about him. Obviously I’m going to Google what’s happening and about him.”
