Arsenal linked to Douglas Luiz transfer – and Man City could make fortune off it

Arsenal are reportedly preparing a Deadline Day move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz – and that is brilliant news for Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta‘s Deadline Day interest in the Brazilian comes after the Gunners’ 2-1 victory over Steven Gerrard’s side. While he found himself on the losing side, he did whip in another wonderful goal direct from a corner.

Perhaps it was this delivery which converted Arteta’s interest in the classy defensive midfielder into prominent action. And if the north Londoners are to follow through on this purported admiration of Luiz, City will be in line to receive a slice of the transfer fee.

That is courtesy of a sell-on clause they inserted into Luiz’s contract when he initially left the Citizens to join Villa, according to The Athletic. Luiz joined Villa in the summer of 2019 for a bargain £15million.

At the time, Luiz was nowhere near Pep Guardiola’s first team selection and Dean Smith was looking for new players to add freshness and zip to his midfield. His performances have not only seen himself pop up on the radars of Arsenal and Liverpool, but he has also gained nine international caps for Brazil.

He has become an instrumental player for Villa, providing the midfield fortifications ever since their return to the Premier League in 2019. However, City may have to wait for their sell-on clause, as The Athletic also understand Villa are not willing to part with Luiz, who has less than one year on his contract.
