FORMER NEWCASTLE United footballer Christian Atsu has beenrescued from the rubble of a Turkish building that collapsed during the devastating earthquake that occurred on Monday, the Ghana Football Association and his club have said.

According to reports more than 5,000 people have died after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit south-east Turkey and northern Syria during the early hours yesterday, followed by a second measuring 7.5.

There had been conflicting rumours concerning Atsu’s status, but earlier today Tuesday, the Ghana FA issued an update on social media. It said on Twitter“We’ve received some positive news that Christian Atsu has been successfully rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building and is receiving treatment. Let’s continue to pray for Christian.”

However according to reports Hatayspor sporting director Taner Savut is still in the collapsed building from which Atsu was rescued. Damage was particularly severe in Hatay because it was one of the regions closest to the earthquake’s epicentre.

Hatayspor’s vice-president Mustafa Özat told Radyo Gol: “Christian Atsu was pulled out injured. Our sporting director, Taner Savut, is unfortunately still under the rubble.”
