NFF finally accepts Finidi George’s resignation after initial refusal

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has finally accepted the resignation of Finidi George as the coach of the Super Eagles after he turned in his resignation letter last Saturday.

The letter from Finidi was allegedly unsigned, which is why the NFF initially rejected the resignation; nevertheless, the quit notice has subsequently been signed and distributed to every executive member.

Finidi stepped down as the coach of the Super Eagles following poor results in the 2026 World Cup qualifying games against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

The coach is said to have decided to step down as coach of the Super Eagles after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser.

The resignation of Finidi who made his debut for Nigeria in 1991, in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burkina Faso was confirmed by former Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on his X account.

Ibitoye wrote: “News just in: Finidi George @FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his @NGSuperEagles manager position.”

His resignation became public knowledge a day after the NFF revealed moves to appoint a Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles.

The NFF which decided to appoint a Technical Adviser last Wednesday during its executive committee meeting noted that the move was important following the dismal outing of the Super Eagles in the last two 2026 World Cup qualifiers
