Euro last 16: Georgia oligarch to award national football team $10m

Coached by Frenchman Willy Sagnol, the team (Georgia) qualified from Group F as one of the four best third-placed finishers.

Georgia’s national football team will receive $10 million from Bidzina Ivanishvili, the country’s powerful oligarch, after qualifying for the last 16 of Euro 2024.

The team’s 2-0 win over Portugal on Wednesday marked a historic triumph in Georgia’s first appearance at a major international tournament.

Georgia will face Spain, who won all their group games, on Sunday, and an additional $10.7 million will be awarded if they win the match.

Bidzina Ivanishvili is Georgia’s richest man and is widely regarded as a puppet master pulling the strings of power from behind the scenes.
