1978 He stole $5.8m, then killed nine people who helped him do it

More than $5.8 million was stolen in the Lufthansa heist at New York City’s Kennedy Airport on December 11, 1978.

The theft was the largest cash robbery committed on American soil at the time.

The heist was one of the longest-investigated crimes in the United States and Jimmy Burke was reputed to be the mastermind, but he was never officially charged in connection with the heist.

Paranoid of being caught over the robbery, Burke set out to kill anyone who could implicate him.

Over the next seven months, 11 people connected with the heist were murdered, nine of them on Burke’s orders.

Burke was never charged over the deaths, but was jailed in 1980 for a basketball point-shaving scandal.

Much of the heist and the aftermath were focal points of the film Goodfellas.
