Florida governor enacts legislation prohibiting minors from accessing social media

Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has recently signed into law a bill aimed at safeguarding minors from the potential harms of social media. The legislation prohibits children under the age of 14 from creating social media accounts and requires parental consent for those aged 14 and 15 to do so.

In a statement issued on Monday, Governor DeSantis highlighted the detrimental effects of social media on children and expressed gratitude to Speaker Renner for spearheading the passage of the bill, known as HB 3.

The new law not only limits minors’ access to social media but also mandates age verification for pornographic or sexually explicit websites to prevent underage exposure.

Speaker Renner emphasized the importance of protecting children from online dangers, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of bill sponsors and expressing pride in Florida’s leadership in addressing these concerns.

With Governor DeSantis’ endorsement, Florida sets a precedent in prioritizing the safety of children in the digital realm, as other states across the nation grapple with similar challenges.
