New York AG Letitia James raises $400K amid Trump fraud case

New York Attorney General Letitia James has amassed $400,000 in donations since initiating her civil fraud case against former President Donald Trump last fall.

Campaign finance data reveals that James’ reelection campaign raised $468,073 between October 2, 2023, the trial’s start, and January 12, 2024. This sum includes a $70,000 transfer from her 2026 campaign.

However, the recent filings do not cover February, when Judge Arthur Engoron ordered a $354 million judgment against Trump, nor March, when Trump sought a bond while appealing the decision. It remains unclear if these events influenced James’ fundraising. Trump eventually secured a $175 million bond agreement, averting a financial crisis.

Newsweek has reached out to James and Trump for comment.

Throughout the trial, James emerged as one of Trump’s primary political adversaries. Following Engoron’s ruling, Trump vocally criticized James on social media, branding her as “racist” and “corrupt” while denouncing her case as unjust.

Last month, he wrote that James was “considered by many to be the WORST Attorney General in the U.S.” in a rant against her and Engoron.

“She is a Low IQ individual who campaigned for Governor, using my name, and got TROUNCED. She and her PUPPET Engoron, who valued Mar-a-Lago at $18,000,000 when it is worth 50 to 100 times that amount, have destroyed all business prospects for New York State, that is already dying, or dead. But have no fear —When I become the 47th President, we will MAKE NEW YORK GREAT AGAIN!” Trump said on March 22.

In the last week, he has also raged against Judge Juan Merchan, the judge presiding over his Manhattan criminal case, and even threatened to sue him in an effort to stop the trial from beginning April 15.
