Last month, data from Public Health England showed that more vaccinated people actually died of the Delta variant in the UK than the unvaccinated. The death rate is 8.45 times higher for the vaccinated than the unvaccinated.

Now, a new study from Israel may shed light on why the death rate is higher for the vaccinated than the unvaccinated with natural immunity. A new report from the Israel Health Ministry just released new data showing that while the Pfizer vaccine is still 88% effective at preventing serious illness, it’s only 39% effective at preventing infection with delta variant.

The efficacy of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine in preventing infection has dropped to 39% but the effectiveness in preventing severe illness still remains relatively high, according to a report from Israeli newspaper YNetNews, citing the Israel Ministry of Health.

“Among those who received both doses of the vaccine and were considered fully immune to the pathogen, 5,770 have been recently diagnosed with COVID after 1,152,914 tests had been conducted,” YNetNews reported.

The new figure refers to a period of about one month from June 20 and July 17, the ministry said, adding that the ongoing decline was observed along with the spread of the Delta COVID-19 variant in Israel. The latest effectiveness rate is significantly lower than that of 64 percent measured between June 6 and July 3, and 94.3 percent measured between May 2 and June 5.

Former New York Times journalist Alex Berenson also shared a tweet saying that “Israel now says the Pfizer vaccine is down to only 40% protection against #Covid infection in the last month. That’s the good news. The bad news: the real number is probably below 30% at this point since the 40% number includes two weeks when effectiveness was notably higher.”

Meanwhile, The Israeli numbers are much lower than other recent studies, including one study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which found that two doses offer 88% protection against the Delta variant causing symptomatic disease while offering 94% protection against the alpha variant.
