Germany set to receive 250,000 Kenyan workers under new labor agreement

Germany has agreed to open doors to 250,000 skilled and semi-skilled Kenyan workers in a controlled labour migration deal.

The deal aims to address the growing challenges Kenya faces in providing work and income for its young professionals, while Germany faces a shortage of skilled labour. The deal was signed in Berlin by Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Kenya’s President William Ruto.

It eases immigration laws, allows Kenyan workers to find employment in Europe’s largest economy, and extends temporary residence permits for Kenyan workers who secure an approved job. IT specialists from Kenya will be allowed to enter and work in Germany, even without formal qualifications.

The deal also includes provisions for the readmission and return of citizens and outlines guidelines to prevent labor exploitation, forced labour, and human trafficking.
