Protests continue in Rivers State following the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and key state officials by President Bola Tinubu. Monday’s demonstration comes days after a pro-Fubara rally and amid mounting opposition from PDP governors.

A fresh wave of protests swept through Rivers State on Monday, following last week’s women-led demonstration in support of the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara. The latest protest, however, backed President Bola Tinubu’s controversial decision to impose a state of emergency and suspend key state officials.

The political crisis in Rivers escalated last month after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the oil-rich state, citing persistent instability and two recent pipeline explosions.

Citing “security reports,” Tinubu said the declaration of a state of emergency was “inevitably compelling.”

“By this declaration,” Tinubu said, “the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months.”

The president appointed retired officer, Ibas, to oversee the state’s affairs in the interim.
