2027: INEC violates Electoral Act, fails to publish voter register online
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reportedly violated the Electoral Act 2026 by failing to publish the preliminary voters’ register online ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to PM News, Section 19(1) requires the register to be displayed physically and online for seven days, not later than 90 days before elections.
Although INEC displayed the register at registration centres between October 9 and 15, its website remained inaccessible for public verification.
The portal reportedly displayed: “There are currently no preliminary registers to display. Please check back later.”
INEC spokesperson Mohammed Haruna confirmed the physical display, explaining that officials were compiling corrections ahead of December 15.
“We published the voter register for claims and objections at our registration areas between October 9 & 15,” he said.
Lagos-based lawyer Mujeeb Abdulwasiu described the omission as unlawful.
“It’s clearly a breach,” he stated.
Officials found guilty could face six months’ imprisonment, a ₦100,000 fine, or both.
