2027: Nigerians don’t like Tinubu, may re-elect him – The Economist
British newspaper The Economist has described President Bola Tinubu as unpopular but said Nigeria’s electoral dynamics could still work in his favour ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.
According to Daily Post, citing The Economist’s Independence Day article, the publication said Tinubu remains calm despite public frustration over the cost of living and insecurity.
“That Nigeria’s unpopular president is not quaking in his suede loafers ahead of the next election says less about him and more about the country’s complicated electoral dynamics,” The Economist wrote on X.
The report comes as Tinubu campaigns for re-election after insisting in his Independence Day address that Nigeria’s period of hardship is ending and prosperity lies ahead.
Tinubu also ruled out restoring the fuel subsidy removed in May 2023.
His major challengers include African Democratic Congress candidate Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the New Nigeria People’s Party, alongside other presidential candidates seeking to defeat the incumbent in 2027 at the polls.
