2027:’Tinubu must come’, ‘Tinubu must go’ supporters clash as political tensions rise
Growing incidents of political violence, intimidation and hate speech across Nigeria have raised concerns about the safety of politicians and voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Vanguard, attacks targeting political gatherings, party offices and supporters have been reported in Lagos, Enugu, Edo, Rivers, Kogi, Cross River and Adamawa states.
In Lagos, suspected hoodlums reportedly attacked a Labour Party secretariat during a defection ceremony involving members joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The gathering was allegedly attacked again after relocating to another venue in Egbeda.
In Rivers, the ADC reported the killing of a member preparing for a political meeting, while opposition gatherings in Enugu and Kogi reportedly suffered violent disruptions.
Cross River’s Peoples Democratic Party also alleged that gunmen attacked two consultation venues, injuring three people.
Meanwhile, supporters of rival “Tinubu Must Come” and “Tinubu Must Go” movements reportedly clashed in Adamawa.
The ADC previously disclosed that it documented attacks and intimidation across nine states between July 2025 and September 2026.
Its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused authorities of failing to adequately investigate incidents involving opposition members.
Police confirmed an attack involving political gatherings in Edo and announced investigations.
However, responsibility for several reported incidents remains disputed or unestablished.
The developments have intensified demands for impartial investigations, stronger security arrangements and protection of democratic rights.
Observers warned that unchecked violence and inflammatory political rhetoric could undermine public confidence, discourage participation and threaten peaceful elections nationwide.
