2028 Olympics: Super Falcons beat Comoros 2-0 in first-leg tie
Nigeria’s Super Falcons defeated Comoros 2-0 on Friday in the first leg of the second-round African qualifier for the women’s football event at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, according to Gazette.
The match, played at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ogun State, was goalless in the first half, with the ten-time African champions, led by interim coach Austin Eguavoen, failing to convert their chances.
Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 48th minute through a tap-in by Michelle Alozie. Uchenna Kanu doubled the lead with a header in the 60th minute. The game also saw Falconets captain Joy Igbokwe make her Super Falcons debut.
The fixture was a home game for Comoros, but it was staged in Nigeria because the country has no CAF-approved venue for the tie. The second leg will be played at the same stadium on October 13.
The winner on aggregate will face Morocco in the next stage, after the Republic of the Congo withdrew from the competition.
Nigeria advanced directly to the second round without playing in the opening round. Comoros reached this stage after beating Sudan 17-0 and 13-0, a 30-0 aggregate win.
The Super Falcons are chasing a return to the Olympics after featuring at Paris 2024, which ended a 16-year absence from the competition. Only two African teams are guaranteed places in the women’s football event at the 2028 Games.
