28 killed in two mass shootings in South Africa

Twenty-eight people have been killed in two mass shootings hours apart in South Africa, while 25 others were injured, police reported.

According to the BBC, eight gunmen stormed a bar near Johannesburg on Saturday evening, killing 18 people and injuring 14 others. The attackers opened fire outside before continuing inside and torching two vehicles while fleeing.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Lt Gen Tommy Mthombeni said investigators think robbery may have motivated the attack because victims’ belongings were taken, although turf wars involving illegal mining groups have not been ruled out.

In a separate attack early Sunday, 10 people were killed outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town, while 11 others were injured. Five victims died at the scene and five later died in hospital.

No arrests had been made in either shooting by Sunday morning.

The attacks came days after gunmen killed 11 people in a house in KwaMakhutha township, Durban, intensifying concerns over South Africa’s gun violence.
