Tennessee used SEVEN needles in botched execution — she tried to help them find her vein!
Convicted killer Christa Pike remains unresponsive but not in a coma following her botched execution in Tennessee, her attorney said, The-Sun.Com reports.
Pike, 50, is in critical condition after surviving two full doses of pentobarbital during a failed execution attempt on Wednesday evening at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Her attorney, Randy Spivey, described the execution as “inefficient, cruel, and torturous,” saying the execution team spent about an hour attempting to find a vein, using at least seven needles in her left arm alone, one of which appeared bent when removed.
According to the outlet, Pike’s other attorney, Stephen Ferrell, said she repeatedly tried to assist the execution team, instructing them where to find IV lines and remaining “kind” and “cooperative” throughout. Spivey said there was blistering and burning around the injection sites, adding that prison officials repeatedly closed the viewing curtains, leaving witnesses able to hear Pike breathe and struggle.
Only seven media witnesses, including Will Puckett of The U.S. Sun, observed the attempt. Puckett said the curtain opening was delayed by nearly an hour and described seeing Pike’s legs move, though it was unclear if this reflected pain. Pike reportedly complained of a vein feeling like it would “bust” but did not scream.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has paused all executions in the state for the rest of the year and ordered an independent review, though Spivey said this does not go far enough, calling for Pike’s sentence to be commuted. The attorneys said it remains unclear whether the state will attempt to execute her again, with the electric chair reportedly among the options under consideration.
