Nigeria risks forfeiting fresh $1.4bn US aid over ‘Christian persecution’
Nigeria risks being excluded from a new $1.4 billion US health and humanitarian assistance package unless the government takes measurable steps to address violence against Christians. According to Vanguard News, the conditions are contained in a Memorandum of Understanding signed on December 20, 2025, under the America First Global Health Strategy, which commits Washington to $2.1 billion over five years, while requiring Nigeria to increase domestic health spending by nearly $3 billion. The US House of Representatives has also voted to tie Nigeria’s aid to verifiable progress on protecting persecuted Christians.
