Nigeria records highest cholera burden in West, Central Africa — UNICEF
Nigeria has recorded the largest cholera outbreak in West and Central Africa, with over 50,000 cumulative cases and 338 deaths since January 1, according to Peoples Gazette.
The outbreak, driven largely by a major surge in Borno State, is part of a wider regional epidemic spanning six countries, including the DR Congo, Chad and Cameroon.
UNICEF regional director Gilles Fagninou attributed the spread to flooding, displacement and lack of safe water access, calling for urgency and regional solidarity. The agency is seeking $15 million in additional funding to scale up its response over six months.
