Mining pit collapses on seven miners in Plateau’s Barkin Ladi — five months after 37 died in similar tragedy
Seven miners were killed on Wednesday evening after a mining pit collapsed on them at a site in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State — the second fatal mining disaster in the state in five months, coming despite a government ban on mining activities imposed to prevent recurring tragedies.
“The pit was too deep, and there were no safety measures. Government must come and regulate these mining sites before more lives are lost,” resident Timothy Bako said.
Daily Trust reported that the incident occurred more than five months after 37 miners died in Kampani Zurak, Wase LGA. The member representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom federal constituency, Fom Dalyop Chollom, called for stricter enforcement of mining safety regulations.
