Copa del Rey matches postponed following fatal train crash in Spain
Spanish football came to a halt on Wednesday following a tragic high-speed train collision in Toledo province that killed at least 30 people.
In response, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) suspended 24 Copa del Rey first-round fixtures scheduled for Wednesday evening.
According to a report by GOAL, the RFEF announced: “As a mark of respect and solidarity with all the victims of the tragic train accident that occurred early this Wednesday in the province of Toledo, the RFEF has ordered the suspension of the 24 matches belonging to the first round of the [Copa del Rey] which were originally scheduled to take place this evening.”
Regional officials confirmed a national Renfe train collided with an Iryo service. Spain’s royal family stated they “share in the sorrow of the families and loved ones of the deceased and send our affection to the injured and those affected.”
The RFEF confirmed it “will provide information in due course regarding the revised tournament schedule and the definitive dates and times for the postponed matches.”
