UK cautions citizens over Nigeria’s ‘miracle baby’ fertility scams
UK Warns Citizens Against Fertility Treatment, Surrogacy Scams In Nigeria
The United Kingdom has warned its citizens against pursuing IVF, fertility treatment, or surrogacy in Nigeria, citing reports of staged fake births known as “miracle babies,” according to Peoples Gazette.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said Nigeria’s weak fertility sector prompted the advisory, urging caution and awareness of UK surrogacy requirements. It also reaffirmed restrictions on adopting Nigerian children, warning of prosecution for bringing in children without blood ties through improper legal channels.
The advisory follows a 2024 BBC investigation exposing “cryptic pregnancy” scams involving fake inductions and staged deliveries targeting desperate women.
