Boxing legend Zolani Tete shot dead in ambush outside South Africa home
Former WBO bantamweight and IBF world champion Zolani Tete has been shot dead outside his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, in an apparent ambush, BBC Sport reports.
The 38-year-old was waiting for his gate to open when armed suspects in balaclavas opened fire on him and a female passenger, who remains hospitalised.
South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, said the country had “lost one of the finest fighters it has ever produced,” confirming a manhunt was underway.
Tete, who held a Guinness World Record for the fastest title-fight knockout, had been preparing for a comeback fight.
