Republicans make early moves to challenge JD Vance for 2028 nomination

Republicans are beginning to position themselves for the 2028 presidential race, with several lawmakers considering campaigns that could challenge Vice President JD Vance for the party’s nomination.

According to The Washington Post, Vance currently leads polling of the emerging Republican field, but Senators Ted Cruz, John Kennedy and Rick Scott have made moves associated with potential presidential campaigns. Senator Rand Paul has also said he is considering a bid.

Cruz has criticised aspects of Vance’s record, while Paul has opposed administration policies including tariffs and foreign military engagements. Kennedy said his decision could depend partly on which Republicans enter the race.

Meanwhile, Vance has continued building support within the Republican Party, including through visits to early nominating states such as Iowa. Senator Jim Banks recently became the first Republican senator to endorse Vance for 2028.

The Post reported that the Republican contest is unlikely to begin in earnest until after the 2026 midterm elections.
