Poor economy: Battling hunger, cost of living crisis amid easing inflation, high energy cost

Despite easing headline inflation and governments’ interventions, millions of Nigerians continue to struggle with food prices, transportation costs and poverty. That has left vulnerable families unable to afford basic meals. LADESOPE LADELOKUN reports

Despite her husband being alive, Yetunde Akeju never misses the chance to identify as a widow, where benefits accompany such a claim at any gathering.
For her, her husband is as good as dead if he could abscond to dodge his fatherly responsibilities, leaving her with four children to singlehandedly train because of economic hardship.

Rather than whine about her situation after her husband’s departure three years ago, opting to give out two of her kids to serve as housemaids, where their education could be guaranteed is her way lessening the financial burden she carries.Meanwhile, despite being a beneficiary of hand-outs to widows during last Sunday Service in her white garment church, she still seeks to give out her remaining two kids out as maids, saying a huge chunk of her N40,000 salary as a cleaner in a private company in Lagos State goes into transportation and feeding.
