Lagos IGR hits N1.77tn, surpasses 22 states combined

Lagos State generated N1.77 trillion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2025, surpassing the combined N909.35 billion generated by 22 other states, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

According to Tribune, NBS reported that the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory generated N5.149 trillion during the year, representing a 40.93 per cent increase from N3.65 trillion in 2024.

Rivers ranked second with N428.42 billion, followed by Enugu with N406.77 billion, while the FCT generated N356.34 billion and Ogun N252.36 billion. Delta recorded N202.49 billion, Edo N132.21 billion, and Oyo N103.25 billion.

The NBS said tax revenue accounted for N3.79 trillion of the total IGR, while Ministries, Departments and Agencies generated N1.36 trillion. Pay-As-You-Earn contributed N2.64 trillion, making it the largest tax component.

The figures highlight the wide disparity in states’ revenue-generating capacity and their differing abilities to finance infrastructure and public services without relying heavily on federal allocations.
