Pope Leo warns AI-driven ‘paradise of machines’ risks eroding humanity

Pope Leo XIV has warned that an artificial intelligence-driven “paradise of machines” could undermine humanity, urging greater ethical discernment as technology increasingly shapes everyday life.

According to the Associated Press, Leo issued the warning during an address to French President Emmanuel Macron and diplomats at the Élysée Palace as he began a four-day visit to France.

The pontiff said education in ethical discernment was urgently needed to prevent humanity from being lost amid machines increasingly influencing daily activities.

Leo, who has identified artificial intelligence as a major challenge facing humanity, also urged developers and political leaders to ensure the technology serves the common good.

He separately criticised nuclear deterrence, describing the doctrine as mistaken and warning that it was fuelling another arms race worldwide.
