Canada PM: We’d be irresponsible not to plan for US invasion

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed that his government prepared for the possibility of a US invasion of Canada amid ongoing trade tensions, according to a New York Post report.

“I think you have a responsibility in these roles to look at extreme tail risk,” Carney told the New York Times in an interview on Wednesday, while in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. “That’s just risk management. That’s not a base case, but it would be irresponsible not to.”

The remarks come amid deteriorating US-Canada relations, with Ottawa having slapped retaliatory tariffs of 15% to 50% on over $20 billion worth of American goods this month, prompting Washington to bar Canadian products from federal contracts.

Carney had earlier said, “We were attacked. You’re at war when you get attacked… We’ve got the reserves. We’ve got the resilience.” President Trump responded by renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” and threatening new auto tariffs.
