Ex-Senator Shehu Sani criticises FG’s $700 billion mineral agreement with US

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has criticised the Federal Government over its reported $700 billion mineral investment framework with the United States, according to Tribune. He said details of the agreement, signed on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly by Minister Dele Alake and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, should have been disclosed earlier for parliamentary scrutiny to protect Nigeria’s interests.

Sani warned the deal must not become a mere swap to replace Chinese miners or appease any foreign power, urging government to address security threats in mineral-rich, bandit-infested communities. He stressed that mineral agreements carry sovereignty implications, warning such deals are difficult to reverse once signed with a superpower.
